Re: Leiothrix lutea
They are bred in a tree-lined aviary (2 x 2 x 1.70 m), where they have begun to fly around the cage with straws in their beaks.

Re: Leiothrix lutea
In the aviary put various nests of different shapes and materials (coconut nest, nest made from a pumpkin, box nest, round nest for canaries in net), the elderberry plant, therefore shady and at the same time allowing good visibility.

Re: Leiothrix lutea
The female began to build the nest, with little help from the male. Given their inability to build their own nest, it is necessary to line the one they have chosen (round for canaries) with a cotton cloth.

Re: Leiothrix lutea
Until then, the couple was given a pelleted feed for insectivores with the occasional addition of some Tenebrio Molitor moths, and insects of all kinds that were never enough.
Only larvae and insects to nestlings.
In relation to the insect provided, the parents exercised a different technique in making it harmless and suitable for the bite: the caterpillars were grabbed and violently slammed against a branch and reduced to a pulp; the grasshoppers, small crickets and mealworms were crushed with their beaks from the head to the abdomen and vice versa a few times while the wasp larvae (very much appreciated) were taken directly to the nest and offered to the chicks.
Very precocious: at 10 days already out of the nest
Exactly 10 days after hatching, the young came out of the nest not yet completely feathered and therefore unable to fly, but with two formidable strong and robust legs, which they used with great skill by jumping from branch to branch. After a few days, the female took interest in the nest again, abandoning the young and laying three more eggs, while the male continued to feed the offspring and took over the brooding with his partner.
Arrived in August, the young of both broods begin the moult which they passed without problems.
They can very well overwinter in the aviary.
Many times there is the greatest concern, the winter rigidity that they would have had to face and instead they overcame the long winter period with ease, not neglecting the bath in the fine hours (which they love very much).
I specify that adults and young people also bathe 2-3 times a day, that I also added ripe elderberries to the diet based on mash, mixture and insects.
